Elie Saab: Paris Couture Week S/S 10

Intricately nude and embellished at Elie Saab. The nude and pastel palette offset the soft shimmer that delicately bounced from the pieces. The lace and embellishments were soft and dainty. The collection was romantic and feminine especially with the watercolour painterly prints. The shorter dresses were equally gorgeous and modern but still captured the fairytale of the show.

Stephane Rolland: Paris Couture Week S/S 10

Couturier du jour thanks to Mrs Cheryl Cole, showed his much anticipated collection. It was definitely worth the wait and the anticipation. A belted skirt suit with voluminous sleeves was given a twist with a splatter of the deepest blood red which was almost purple. Another skirt suit was given an edge with a shoulder with high ruffles and printed skirt edge. One shouldered dresses in cream with a shell-like scalloped sleeve had the most intricate detail. Simple pieces such as tailored trousers and belted dresses were elevated with added details. The dresses were breathtaking, fluid and softly sheer, in deep colours with details plentiful and precise structure and shapes.

Josephus Thimister: Paris Couture Week S/S 10

Bloodshed and Opulence... a very apt name for the collection indeed. The blood red of the collection was startling and very, very opulent. I'm not a fan of red but this red was beautiful and deep. The splashes of painterly blood also added to the theme and not in an eery way. The military inspirations complemented the reds to create a superb Russian themed colour palette. I loved the way that it didn't look like 'couture' at first glance but when you looked closer the details and the colours told the story that the designer wanted to create.

Givenchy: Paris Couture Week S/S 10

Dark elegance meets startling brights. The androgynous and slightly gothic start to the collection highlighted the beauty of artisan detailing. A single piece consisted of corsetry, panelling, ruffles and perfect tailoring. The collection nodded to the big trends with thigh-high boots, ruffles, feathers and lingerie. The collection confidently brightened up with metallic acids in blue, green and purple with great prints and embroidery. I am loving the gothic make up and I have fallen for feathers all over again.

Giorgio Armani Prive: Paris Couture Week S/S 10

A lunar experience at Armani. The crescent shape was seen throughout the collection, not only in motifs but also influencing fluid and voluminous shapes in the collection. The pieces were sharp, streamed, sexy and smooth. The skirt suits had the finest tailoring with a soft edge to add to the femininity. The volume in the shoulders and sleeves blended perfectly with the lunar theme. The colour palette was reminiscent of moonlight and sparkled along the catwalk. The fluidity of the pieces won me over and had perfect movement. I have seen the moon in a whole new light.

Christian Dior: Paris Couture Fashion Week S/S 10

The genius that is Galliano showed his equestrian streak in this homage to dressage. The collection was stunning, every piece said a million words. The first half of the collection focussed on fitted jackets which hugged the body and long skirts with beautiful volume. Leather gloves and boots added sex appeal as did the hair and make up which was almost as stunning as the pieces themselves. Coat dresses in red and soft checks fitted in with the theme perfectly. It all hinted at the New Look of the late 40's and what a welcome return it was. The second half of the collection was worth waiting for, the dresses were masterpieces. No detail was overlooked and showed what couture truly is. The lace was soft and delicate and on the right side of girly whilst the pleated skirts and embellished blouses were delicate and pretty. The volume and pleating of the satin pieces were lovely and the fluidity showed as the models moved. The evening dresses were also breathtaking in ice blue, soft yet burnt orange, black and deep red. Oh Galliano <3

Chanel: Paris Couture Fashion Week S/S 10

Paris Couture screams of beauty, elegance and dreams all in an endless flourish of expense, luxury and glamour.  Oh how I wish I was there, well I guess that's why the Internet was invented... to bring couture to my Mac <3. The Chanel girls strolled onto the catwalk with bows and bouffants. Reminiscent of little girls playing dress-up in their Mother's chic yet eccentric wardrobe. The classic tweed suit received another makeover this time in the form of a delicious pastel palette with exquisite metallic embellishments. The tailoring oozed the expertise of Chanel as did the volume, fluidity and effortless drama of the dresses. The metallic shoes and gloves added a gladiatorial element to counteract the gorgeous prettiness of the collection. I loved the lace details and my favourite pieces were the coat dresses. The evening dresses made my heart skip a beat and shows why Chanel is Couture or Couture is Chanel.

H&M: Organic Cotton Fraud?

via: Ecouterre

Two weeks ago, we blogged about H&M's new eco-friendly "Garden Collection." Although we were supportive of their efforts, we did have some doubts as to how "eco-friendly" the line was, considering such a low price point.

So it's not to our surprise to hear the recent speculation that H&M's eco-friendly materials are actually 30% genetically modified cotton, and not organic. The contaminated cotton was traced back to India, which is responsible for more than half of the global supply of organic cotton. This means that it is not just H&M who is using genetically modified cotton, leading other retailers and brands to investigate the issue.

Although H&M is moving in the right direction with their attempt to be more eco-friendly, this mishap can be a lesson for all designers, brands, and retailers to see how imperative it is to thoroughly monitor the supply chains and work in transparent production systems.

The Upcycle, Recycle Business

 via: Flickr

As much as we love technology, sometimes it's nice to just go back to the simple life of making use of what already exists. In consideration of how much waste we produce, whether it be food, clothes, packaging, or office supplies, recycling is something that we can all do a lot more of. And Tom Szaky, founder of TerraCycle, shows that you can also make a successful business out of it, too.

While as a business student at Princeton University, Szaky took leftover food from the school cafeteria and fed it to worms. Turning waste into rich fertilizer, he then sold it in discarded soda bottles. Flash forward five years, his humble business has turned into a global food and packaging recycling program with five warehouses across the US, and more in Canada, Brazil, France, Germany, and the UK. Working with some of US' biggest consumer companies, including Kraft, Mars, PepsiCo, Kimerly-Clark, and General Mills, TerraCycle boasts with over 100 products made from recycled trash. Circuit boards are redesigned as picture frames, juice packs are collected into making backpacks, and cookie wrappers are reworked as pencil cases.

As all industries strive toward greener practices, the future of recycling has become more innovative in developing creative, sustainable solutions. As we look even in the fashion industry, the exclusive Parisian fashion house, Maison Martin Margiela, has been doing it since the beginning of its career through the Artisanal Line, transforming every day objects into high-end couture. And the more commercial brand, Urban Outfitters, has offered reworked vintage clothing through their Urban Renewal line for over twenty years.

As environmental consciousness continues to rise in importance, the fashion industry has been more keen on the idea of recycling. Last April, Fendi threw a performance art-like event "Craft Punk", challenging designers to create objects, art, and furnishings using materials discarded from the Fendi production process. And just last month, Stefano Pilati of YSL released his second edition of the capsule collection "New Vintage", offering his classic silhouettes made from recycling unused fabrics from the YSL archive. There are also more smaller boutiques, like Clothespin and Reformation, both of which have opened this past year, offering a unique, stylish assortment of reworked vintage clothing.

From the runways to the shopping malls, recycling is becoming a common thread in the fashion industry. And as sustainability is essential to it's future success, we have no doubt that in the years ahead, the concept of recycling will continue to grow as it is taken to the next level. As for any industry, innovation does not necessarily mean high-tech; sometimes brilliance can be discovered in the ordinary.

Mascara Wars. Round One

The battle has begun. The contenders in this beauty fest are Collagen Curl by Collection 2000 and Colossal Volum' Express by Maybelline. I have never used any products by Collection 2000 before so I bought this with much trepidation. The packaging won me over with it's retro, purple tube. I saw the Maybelline mascara on an advert and the model screaming out ''COLOSSAL'' over and over again at me through the screen persuaded me. It doesn't take much really.

Collagen Curl
Brush: Curved brushes always get bonus points. The brush was thick, easy to use and the all important curve gave my lashes a great curl.
Volume: Why have I not been introduced to Collection 2000 before. The thickness of this mascara after two coats was amazing, and rivals some of the luxury brands I usually use.
Length: I wasn't too impressed with the lengthening effect, but the volume made up for the lack of length.
Coats: I needed to use 3 coats of this, to get a look that I was happy with.
Long Lasting: I wore this all day and not a single smudge.
Rating: 3.5/5 - Great brush and volume but not enough length and too many coats needed.

Colossal Volum' Express:
Brush: Nice large bush with lots of bristles, these brushes tend to work best as they reach all eyelashes.
Volume: Not as much volume as the Collagen Curl but after another coat it was very nice indeed.
Length: I'm so happy with the lengthening effect I could sing. The length after one coat is impressive and after 2 coats, it was as the model said ''COLOSSAL''.
Coats: I used two as I'm a mascaraholic, one coat however was sufficient.
Long Lasting: I went bellydancing in this and it stayed on perfectly.
Rating: 4.5/5 - One of the best lengthening mascaras, that I have used and when built up the volume is great. Would have got extra points if it added as much volume as Collagen Curl.

Round One Winner - Colossal Volum' Express by Maybelline
I was naughty and used them together after the test and combined they are the perfect mascara as one has the length and the other has the volume. Plus at £9.00 for the two of them why not.

Prices: Both are £4.99 at Superdrug. Why have I been spending over £20 on mascara for so long. Sigh.

In search of perfection. Mascara Wars

After I purchased the Renewal Lash Serum (last post), I decided to treat myself to another mascara. I use about 6 coats of mascara every day, each coat tends to be a different mascara. It does make one's make-up bag rather heavy. I am trying to get into the habit of using just ONE, so this ONE mascara better be as good if not better than six. The search is on, any suggestions are very welcome. The frontrunner at the minute is Chanel Exceptionnel De Chanel which is divine as well as DiorShow. So my search begins with L'oreal Double Extension Carbon Black.
Step 1: Base coat with Ceramide R - I really like the base coat, it was the right consistency and gave my lashes a lot of length.
Step 2: Carbon Black - I like the intensity of the colour, which deepens the lengthening and thickening effect from step 1. I am impressed. There was also no clumping, even after my generous 3 coats... I couldn't resist.
Overall: Good start to the proceedings, really nice look for everyday although it just isn't dramatic enough for a 6 coats of mascara kinda girl. I did keep applying more coats and it didn't clump so that gets extra points.

L'oreal Renewal Lash Serum

I heart Mascara. Any new mascara, gimmick, or super product my eyelashes are ready. This product is a serum which during the day you apply under your mascara and during the night you apply to your bare lashes. L'oreal claim that it will make 'Lashes feel fortified, look renewed.' It has Arginine and Centella in it which nourish and boost lashes. I have used it for over a week now, in all honestly I wasn't expecting much at all but I bought it anyway. But... my lashes definitely look fuller and healthier, I wouldn't say they are longer but the fullness gives the appearance of longer lashes...very clever eh. So, I shall keep persevering with this and let you know how LashWatch is going.

Boots: £10.99 (free eyeliner when you buy any L'oreal mascara too)

Lush Toner Tabs

Lush Toner Tabs
I haven't done a Lush post for the New Year, after my mammoth review last year. I don't like to boast but I was in Lush Times (Lush Newspaper) this month for a review I done on their Ultra Bland Cleanser. Me and Lush go way back (I wish). So I went in the store I picked up some toner tabs. I have used them once before and they worked a treat so I picked up a few more. There are different varieties: Q10, Tea Tree, Vitamin E and Vitamin C. I like that they are not astringent as some toners tend to be and they are very calming and therapeutic. You have to fizz one in a bowl of warm water, use it to steam your face and then either dip some cotton wool in the water and use on your face or splash some on. Q10 is for shaving apparently so I haven't tried that one but I guess it would be a good soother. The Tea Tree is very good especially if you have a breakout or after a long/good night out. I love the Vitamin E it is so relaxing and soothing and the lavender is great on the skin and the vitamin E really balances out your skin. The Mother used the Vitamin C and remarked that it was 'Very good indeed.' This ones very restorative so good for anti-aging on 'older' skin.

Lush Toner Tabs: £0.75 each

Oh Chanel.

Chanel is a girl's best friend. I want two things from Chanel this month. Nail Polish and a waiting list. Le Vernis Particulière is the Jade of S/S 10. I need it in my life. Did I do the waiting list, of course not. Why you ask? I hate waiting lists for nail polish, I refuse to do it, although I am kicking myself (with heels on I might add) that I didn't. So I shall do it the old fashioned way and kick and scream my way into Selfridges on Jan 29th at 9am maybe 10am. I will not leave until my nails are painted in a delightful hue of greyish brown or until someone scary pushes me away. My other Chanel item is the Le Trompe L'oeil de Chanel temporary tattoos from S/S 10. I don't like temporary tattoos, I have a real one (pink bow, left wrist). However, I do like Chanel temporary tattoos... I have no idea where I shall affix them but I want some. They are due for launch on March 1st at Selfridges, I shall be there with elbows sharpened again. I am also calling Chanel Bond Street on Monday bright and early to be put on the waiting list, if they don't have one they will have to start one. Yes, I am a waiting list snob, no to nail polish but a definite yes to temporary tattoos. Chanel does strange things to a girl.

Ugg Australia & Jimmy Choo

I can't believe that Ugg Australia and Jimmy Choo are collaborating to make a collection. Only due to the fact that I actually work for Ugg Australia and I was not aware of this until WWD kindly told me. Fair enough, I am only a Sales Assistant but still. I am too excited for words right now. I can't wait to see the collection. There will be five styles in different colours hitting stores in October from £495-£695. Plus Jimmy Choo are doing some amazing collabs so this is definitely exciting news.

Cornbread. The American Way.

I miss the U.S. I miss 5th Avenue. I miss Sephora. I miss the hustle and bustle of New York and the ease and calm of the South. I miss Mike's Diner. I miss drinking Frappucinos in Central Park. I miss standing outside Tiffany's and staring at the sparkles and dodging suited business men. I miss lazing around on balconies in Georgia in the midst of a heatwave. God Bless America. So I thought I would make some good old cornbread. There were loads of recipes on English websites but none as good as an American one I found, hence the American Unit measurements. But, cups are very easy to use, less washing up and no scales needed. You can't always be precise but I quite like that.

Cornbread. The American Way.
This recipe is not very sweet, but tastes great. It is delicious with strawberry jam and clotted cream to add a quaint British twist. Or go all traditional with some sticky syrup.
* Lipstick & Marzipan Tip: I didn't have any sour cream so I added the same quantity of milk with some fresh lemon juice and it worked a treat.

Ingredients:
1 Cup Flour
1 Cup Cornmeal
1/4 Cup Sugar
1/2 Tsp Baking Powder
1/2 Tsp Baking Soda (Bicarb)
1/2 Tsp Salt
1 Egg (lightly beaten)
1 Cup Sour Cream
1/3 Cup Milk
1/4 Cup Melted Butter

Method:
1. Grease a square tin and preheat oven to 200C.
2. Mix all dry ingredients together
3. Add all of the wet ingredients to the mix and stir well. Et Voila
4. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown and a knife/toothpick has no residue on it when placed in the middle of cake.

Not such a material girl...

Another Thursday night, another mindless fashion show. I do despair. The BBC's 'Material Girl' lured me in with promises of an episode filled with Barbie dreams, Louboutins, drama and general fashionista fun all with a delightful spritz of Chanel No.5 in an 8pm time slot. What more could a humble fashion student want from a Thursday night? Well, wasn't I sorely disappointed. Material Girl is trying to be Devil Wears Prada and Ugly Betty but it just doesn't work. Me and the Besties kept saying 'If only it was American.' US fashion shows are the best, they may not be a true reflection of the industry but they're at least entertaining. The BBC's outing threw in every fashion stereotype known into the hour and the fashion, well I don't even want to remark. Oh, I hate being mean but I really didn't like this... but on the plus side two of the men were quite hot so that's reason alone to tune in next week.

H&M's Garden Collection

 via: H&M

Expected to launch this coming March, H&M's new eco-friendly line, The Garden Collection, offers a wide assortment of feminine and stylish pieces, all priced under $60. Using only organic or recycled materials, some of the materials used in this collection include organic cottons, organic linens, recycled polyester, polyester made from PET-bottles or textile waste, and Tencel. And as the name suggests, the collection is inspired by chlorophyll-green gardens; summer dresses in romantic floral prints, blouses with colorful garden prints, and skirts with bright ethnic floral patterns.

However, with such a low price point, we can't help but question if the production is any different from their other lines. Where is all of this being made and by whom? And as the collection is filled with brightly colored patterns and prints, the dye process is also questionable. Although the concept of using organic and recycled materials is great, we hope that this line will expand beyond fabric choices on what it truly means to be an eco-friendly line.

It's just a bit difficult to not be so critical considering that the look book for the Garden Collection was released immediately after New York Times highlighted a pile of unsold clothes trashed outside H&M's 34th Street location in New York City's Herald Square.

Nevertheless, the Garden Collection is still a positive step heading toward the right direction. We give H&M a plus for their efforts to use more eco-friendlymaterials. And as a global chain retailer, we are excited to see moreconscientious fabric choices in the mass market and hope that this willencourage both consumers and other retailers to think more aboutfashion sustainability.

"This Just in From Vivienne Tam..."

via: Zimbio

As mentioned in our last blog post, the integration of fashion and technology is inevitable and happening now. One of our readers brought Vivienne Tam's latest collaboration with Monster Cable to our attention and we wanted to share it with the rest of you. With her previous collaboration with HP, Ms. Tam is not new to the idea of fashion technology.

With more information coming up this February during NY Fashion Week, the designer and Monster Cable will be introducing a limited edition headphone product made especially for the stylish women who want to truly express themselves and their personal taste. Recognizing that music and fashion go hand in hand, Ms. Tam quotes, "Fashion and music give you a different journey, different world and experiences of life. Music gives my design movement and rhythm. I dance with my designs. Double Happiness."

We're thrilled to hear about this collaboration and will keep you updated once we find out more information. And of course, we always love receiving suggestions from our readers. If you have anything you want to share, please don't hesitate to email us!

What's New in Fashion?

With constant technological innovations, new ideas and concepts are continuously being developed in the product field. Even within the last few years, we have seen revolutionary concepts; we have smartphones, the iPhone, BluRay DVD players, and now even HD 3-D enabled televisions. There is always "the next big thing" that consumers can't wait to get their hands on. Despite the economic state, innovation is rampant in product development and people are willing to spend big bucks to keep up with the latest techno gadgets.

The fashion world, however, seems to be barely hanging in comparison. As many retailers are struggling to meet sales goals and the average consumer is no longer interested in paying full price, the retail and fashion industry is faced with a great challenge.

As technology continues to take the lead, fashion houses and retailers must realize the importance of collaboration outside the fashion realm. The future of fashion is much more than recycling trends and updating silhouettes, but rather experimenting with new concepts. Like any other industry, and with today's fast and ever-evolving society, in order for fashion houses and retailers to succeed, there needs to be more innovation.

photo via: Freshnness Mag
Opening Ceremony, for example, takes a fresh new spin of the hotel shop experience with their latest venture of opening New York City's second store at one of our new favorites places, the Ace Hotel. Beyond clothes and fashion, this shop caters to the avid traveler's lifestyle; offering stylish, unique souvenirs of designer totes and accessories exclusive to the location, and collectible treats from around the world. With a personalized and distinct shopping experience, this is what will stand out amongst the other small boutique shops.

photo via: Design Boom
A few giant retailers are also making progression. Uniqlo's HeatTech line is a great example of combining technology and fashion, offering basics made from a mixture of rayon and milk protein that traps body moisture and uses it to retain heat.

photo via: The Daily Beast
Following similar ideas of Target and H&M designer collaborations, Gap recently collaborated with Merci, one of our favorite Parisian boutiques mentioned in an earlier blog post, bringing the commercial market together with small, high-end fashions. The internet is also inevitably going to change the retail scene, as Sears and Walmart both have online marketplaces, like Amazon and Ebay, allowing other firms to sell merchandise on their site.

Despite the economic state, the longevity of designers and retail companies is not the next sales goal, but creativity and smart design. Although fashion trends are developed and inspired by what is going on around us, the more interesting and exciting aspect of fashion is how it can be a leader of innovation, rather than it's follower.

Ginger Cake Bundles & Winter Delights

I hope you all had amazing xmas and New Year. I have been absent for a little while from the world of Lipstick and Marzipan. I was away in the deep and dismal depths of Luton visiting my Grandparents for the holidays. It was such fun. My Grandma is a pastry chef so you can only imagine the delights. I decided to have a peek in some of her cookbooks and found this yummy recipe to give to Xmas guests to take away with them or have with tea.

Ginger Cake Bundles & Spiced Whipped Cream

Ingredients:
170g Plain Flour
2 tsp Baking Powder
1/2 tsp Salt
2 tsp Ground Ginger
2 tsp Ground Cinnamon
1 tsp Ground Cloves
1/4 tsp Grated Nutmeg
2 Eggs
225g Caster Sugar
250 ml Whipping Cream
1 tsp Vanilla Essence
Icing Sugar for Sprinkling

Method
1.  Preheat the oven to 180c/350f/Gas 4. Grease a 23cm square baking tin.
2. Sift the flour, baking powder, salt and spices into a bowl and set aside.
3. With an electric mixer, beat the eggs on a high speed until very thick for about 5 minutes.
4. With the mixer on a low speed beat in the flour mixture alternately with the cream, beginning and ending with the flour. Stir in the vanilla.
5. Pour cake mixture into the tin and bake until the top springs back when touched lightly for 35-40 minutes. Let cool in the tin on a wire rack for 10 minutes.
6. Sprinkle with icing sugar and cut into squares.

For the whipped cream, whip some double cream with ground ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon and icing sugar.

As I decided to make mine into little bundles of winter joy I did the following:
- Cut strips of greaseproof paper to wrap around the cake squares.
- Use apricot jam as an adhesive for the paper.
- Tie ribbon over the paper into a little bow.
- I used festive coloured ribbons but you can change the ribbons according to the occasion.

I thought I would add a pic of my lovely centrepiece. I am quite proud of it.
