Honeycomb...

Honeycomb
There's always that time of the week when you have a sweet craving, and then there is nothing in the cupboard of any use. The nearest shop which is about 3.5 minutes from my house seemed way too far. So I decided to make some honeycomb, which must be the quickest and most satisfying recipe ever. Not only does it taste unreal on its own, it can also transform a dessert. Crumbled into ice-cream or used as a decoration it is perfect... memories of childhood will come flooding back.

Ingredients:
1tbsp Vegetable Oil, for oiling baking tray
80g Butter
160g Caster Sugar
80g Golden Syrup
2tsp Bicarbonate of Soda

Method:

  1. 1. Grease a 20cm square baking tin with vegetable oil.

    2. Gently heat the butter, sugar and golden syrup in a medium heavy based pan until the sugar has dissolved. Turn up the heat and boil rapidly, without stirring. If the mixture goes darker at the sides then swirl the pan gently to mix. Keep boiling until the mixture goes a golden-brown colour - this will take about 5 mins.

    3. Add the bicarbonate of soda and stir it for a few seconds, and the mix will expand and fizz. Tip the honeycomb into the oiled baking tray and leave until cold and set.

    4. Break into shards and use in desserts.. or just eat.

*Lipstick & Marzipan* Tip: These make great presents, put in cute plastic or paper bags and decorate with ribbon and a little note.

Milan Fashion Week: Autumn/Winter 2011-12

I am feeling the Italian love right now, as you can see from above. Love. Love. Love. Apart from the fabulousity of me being on Vogue.it it's also Milan Fashion Week. So here are the first few shows of the week. I am ridiculously excited, Milan is always gorgeous...

Alberta Ferretti
A collection of classic daywear in strong autumnal colours all paired with velvet thigh boots. The pieces then gave way to stunning evening wear with a spattering of sequins and embellishment. The tones used in the show were a highlight, especially the teal and the very marked evolution from day into night.

Fendi
A collection for a lady appears to be put together but on closer inspection there is a carefree mood. The tights, which were the colour of autumn leaves were slightly baggy at the knees. Masculine shapes were feminised with a large ruffle. The fur made the collection even more special as did the working of the rich colours.

D&G
This was just pure, unadulterated fun. Alphabet prints in monochrome burst into a rainbow of neon brights. The pieces included jumper dresses, trousers and sheer floaty dresses. The pieces were all shown with sneaker-wedges and socks. Body-conscious elements, such as 80s tubes were offset with oversized pieces. A t-shirt proclaimed "International Sexy Girl Here" and the finale featured alphabet tees and feather skirts. A predict a high-street-copying-riot.

Gucci
I am loving Gucci at the moment. For S/S 11 the jewelled tones were breathtaking and this season I am equally as impressed. Frida Giannini cited Florence Welch as one of her inspirations, which is quite possibly why I am lusting after every piece. Fedora hats and fur with touches of exotic skins all added to the seventies glamour. The jumpsuits, the colours, the sheerness, all hinted at a nostalgic elegance. Of course, the looks were good old-fashioned sexy with the thigh splits and dresses seductively tied at the neck. <3

Prada
Exotic skins were seen here again, in the form of boots and cocoon coats. Low-slung belts were worn over coat dresses which introduced a new silhouette and a move away from the hourglass. Fur collars were seen amongst the python as were large mermaid-esque sequins. I'm still feeling unsure about the collection to be honest. However, I adored the distinct girlishness of it all and the bag that was held as a clutch. Hmmm...

Maxmara
Futuristic, feminine and winter-chic. Knit dresses were cinched at the waist with a high neck. Jackets and coats were given a welcome finishing touch with a fur side panel. A grey bandeau dress was teamed with a fur snood and checked blanket dresses and coats were the ultimate in glamorous comfort. This collection has given me a renewed appreciation for leggings. The exposed skin in some places was balanced with the sheer warmth of the cosier looks. <3

Moschino
A masculine and military collection interspersed with feminine dresses and skirt suits. The masculinity came via double-breasted jackets, uniform insignia, tailored trousers and tuxedos with cummerbund here and there. The dresses were fitted with bountiful ruffles and long gloves. I loved the gold detail seen in the military pieces and also in the lame looks which were seen with navy jumpers. The rose print was a surprise and the size of the print ensured that it fit in well with the rest of the collection.

Cotton: The New Luxury?

photo via: Bizmology

We saw the warnings last year when many companies began to slowly raise the prices of their cotton-made products and overall use less cotton and more synthetic blends. The price of cotton rose almost 80% within last year, caused by the flooding in Pakistan, bad weather in China and India, and the initial low inventory due to a weak demand during the recession.

But last Friday marked a record high of a 150% increase since beginning of 2010, with cotton prices at  $1.90 a pound. And reasonably, as many manufacturers switched to cheaper alternatives, prices of polyester and other synthetic fibers also increased.

Come July and August when the new fall 2011 collections hit the sales floors, it is guaranteed that we will see price increases all across the board, no matter the price point. How much of an increase, however, is yet to be determined. Retailers from all levels face the challenge of finding ways to keep their price points competitive, yet understandable to consumers. After the last several years with all down low recession prices, how customers will react to the increases after being so used to the bargain-friendly merchandise is what's on every retailer's mind.

Denim companies face the biggest obstacle as cotton is their primary raw material. Levi's announced plans to increase prices, while Mustang, a Germany-based supplier of denim-inspired lifestyle fashion, is actively working on a goal-oriented set of measures to manage the additional costs. Besides moderate price increases, the company plans to lay off about 16 of their approximately 600 employees worldwide, affecting mostly the staff working in overhead functions. With rising production prices, retailers must reconsider all facets of their business structure to stay afloat. Other apparel companies that plan to increase prices include V.F. Corporation, J.C. Penney, Nike, and Hanesbrands.

However, as prices in traditional fabrics increase, there is an opportunity for new eco-friendly materials to find it's place. For example, H&M reported a 10% drop in profits as margins were hurt by rising input costs. However, the Stockholm-based company insists that it will not lift prices at the expense of market share. Earlier this month, H&M debuted a range of environmentally friendly fashion for spring, expected to hit stores April 14, 2011. Named "The Conscious Collection" for men, women, and children, the line is made from sustainable materials like organic linen, recycled polyester, and Tencel. No longer just about organic cotton, the line emphasizes the endless possibilities of fashionable items with smarter green materials. H&M expects to continue this line several times throughout the year. And let's not also forget their recent Waste Collection, the limited line made from left over fabrics from the production of H&M's designer collaboration with Lanvin.

Recycled materials and vintage clothing will naturally gain momentum as both require little to none materials cost. The American swimwear brand, Speedo, recently collaborated with student designers from the London College of Fashion, University College Falmouth, and the University of Huddersfield to rework their surplus of LZR Racer swimsuits. The Speedo LZR Racer was launched in 2008, but due to the 2009 ban preventing swimmers to compete in full-body swimsuits, the company was left with a substantial amount of dead stock. Collaborating with eager and creative students, the final result was a couture twist to the normal swimwear attire. Click here to watch the behind-the-scenes video of the student collaboration

Just a few days ago, J.Crew's little sister, Madewell also announced their collaboration with fashion blog Refinery29 and presented a curated selection of vintage goods through their "Very Vintage Boutique" on their online shop. With less than 30 pieces, the collection of one-offs is extremely exclusive, affordable, and fashionably on trend. Targeting the twenty-something fashionistas, purchasing vintage finds is made easier than ever.

And for those into the military-inspired trend, Christopher Raeburn and Victorinox, the brand behind the Swiss Army Knife, debuted their Fall/Winter 2011 collection last Thursday on the first official day of New York Fashion Week. The eight-piece "Remade in Switzeland" capsule collection is designed solely from decommissioned military uniforms and parachute fabrics. Featuring unisex parkas, coats, hoodies, scarves, and caps sewn by local tailors, only 100 pieces per look were made.

But even beyond socially and environmentally conscious made products, we are also seeing more and more affordable sustainable fabrics made available to the masses. The assumption that eco or socially friendly products is too expensive is losing it's validity as websites like Offset Warehouse and Source4Style allow anyone to order anywhere from a yard to an entire roll of ethical fabrics at a fair price. With more transparency and affordability of ethical fabrics, design students are becoming better educated with what is out there, while smaller designers are enabled to afford greener options. Furthermore, current and future brands will have more meaningful visions as sourcing becomes increasingly important in the retailer's identity.

There is a drastic shift in the way the retail industry is running today. The roles have reversed and power has come to the hands of the producers. The financial crisis led many producers into bankruptcy, resulting in a smaller, more expensive production capacity. The resulting increase in sourcing costs affects all companies in the apparel industry in a way that has never been before. And while some businesses may react by increasing prices or reevaluating their costs, others will see this as a timely occasion to carefully consider alternative, more sustainable possibilities.

London Fashion Week: Autumn/Winter 2011-12

I have been so disorganised for fashion week this season, I have come to the realisation that when you're in the final year of a degree, your life is not your own. I finally made it to Somerset House today to take a trip through the exhibition. I met some amazing designers, which I shall post about sooon. But here's a round up of some of the shows that stood out from the week so far.

Aminaka Wilmont
The models stomped down the catwalk with a look of determination in their eyes. The collection focused on a animalistic and grungy look. The prints verged on tribal and had an edgy feel when paired with harder elements such as leather. I adored the shearling jackets and the prints really stole the show and emphasised the strength of the collection.

Bora Aksu
There were moments of deconstructed tailoring, then futuristic hints. The collection was heavily layered and I loved the blend of textures and shapes in one look. Chunky knits were interwoven with heavy lace., which I adored and the green was used perfectly.

Vivienne Westwood Red Label
The essence of Westwood was captured here. She showed what she does best, and yet again it was just great. Checks, stripes and feminine dresses all with that expected dose of angst. The layering and shapes were magnificent and the multi-coloured feather jacket was just breathtaking. Oh, Aunt Viv <3

Unique
Unreal. That just sums up my feelings on the collection, this is quite possibly one of my favourite shows of season. I adored 101 Dalmations and any collection that uses Cruella De Vil as a muse, is destined for a great show. The Dalmation theme was played out in fur prints, t-shirt motifs and little doggy prints on blouses. Also, with the model's hair styled into lil puppy ears... too cute. Canine business aside, there were many references to the 30's in the with nautical hints and pyjama pants. J'adore <3

Temperley London
For their 10th anniversary, Temperley has returned to London Fashion Week and they came back with a beautiful collection. The dresses were gorgeous and so intricately detailed, you could admire them for hours. Each piece told a new story from the trompe l'oeil lace print to red ruffles. Divine.

House of Holland
Only Henry Holland could pull off bingo balls and crochet in the same collection. Tweeds were seen with tiered lace and silk. The collection was feminine, fun and very elegant for House of Holland.

Issa London
A collection of pretty pieces with mentions of birds and feathers used in prints. The collection has been one to watch ever since Kate Middleton threw the brand further into the spotlight. I'm sure everyone had their eyes on the "princess-worthy" pieces in the collection. The pieces were bright and fun and the draping assured a sleek finish. My favourite look was a rust, floor length dress with a high neckline. The Manolos and felt hats by Stephen Jones were the ultimate accessories.

Mulberry
After this collection I am now inspired to a) watch The Fantastic Mr Fox and b) go on a weekend away in the country. There were many metallics and more bird prints. I loved the pops of colour that broke away from the traditional mood of the other looks. Blanket scarves and pleating added different elements of texture.

The NY Fashion Week Scoop

It's that time of year again: New York Fashion Week! The fashion madness all officially began last Thursday; and since then, the city has been bustling with models, editors, buyers, and stylish fashionistas making their appearances from one show to the next. Today, we highlight several buzz-worthy NY Fashion Week news, keeping you up to speed with the latest designers to watch, shows to see, and collections to buy!

1. M. Patmos
photo via: Style.com

It was an unfortunate event when knitwear duo Lutz & Patmos bid farewell last year. But after the break up, Marcia Patmos decided to fly solo and presented a small yet strong collection for this fall. The best in creating innovative knits in soft and cozy yarns, we are all glad to see Patmos back in the fashion scene!

2. Carven's Guillaume Henry

photo via: NY Times
Being one of the first collections to sell out at Barney's, Carven has made a comeback ever since Mr. Henry took it's reign. Although Guillaume Henry is not yet a household name, he is quietly climbing the ropes to being the next hottest designer. Keeping to Mme. Carven Mallet's youthful spirit, he continues her vision of creating beautiful, modern clothes without the ridiculously expensive price tag. Look out for his latest collection during Paris Fashion Week. You don't want to miss it.

3. The most creative and mind-blowing presentation yet goes to none other than the skiwear giant, Moncler Grenoble. As tourists and busy NY locals were making their way through the crowded Grand Central Station last Sunday, the Beaux Arts Grand Concourse suddenly transformed into the fashion hot spot as Moncler Grenoble gave a "Flash Mob" performance. With more than 200 dancers and singers, the group gave a superb stylish performance inspired by legendary dance-maestro Bob Fosse. Click here to watch the video!

4. Remember one of our earlier posts when we discussed the blurring lines of advertising, business, and media? Well, the line might as well no longer exist. As we continue to see a shift of little to none discrepancy between commerce and editorial, we take you to the next level as we announce Net-A-Porter's new video portal, Net-A-Porter TV. Using the Google TV platform, Net-A-Porter TV includes four different channels: Runway, Who's Who, Trends 101, and Flashbacks. What makes this even better is customers can shop as they browse, comment, and share the content. Products appear on screen and buying is naturally part of the whole experience. Barney's followed with a similar site, The Window, which launched earlier this week, featuring slideshows and videos of fashion designers and their latest product arrivals.

5. And let's not forget! Although NY Fashion Week ends this weekend, there is another New York runway show later in March that is a definite must see. Featuring fashion's top designers, Christie's A Bid to Save the Earth auction event, "Runway to Green" include special pieces from their fall 2011 collections, and proceeds will go toward environmental causes. A few of the participating designers and design houses include Gucci, Prada, Balenciaga, Burberry, Yves Saint Laurent, Marc Jacobs, Diane von Furstenberg, Stella McCartney, Rachel Roy, Marchesa, Jason Wu, and Alexander Wang. The event will also launch an exclusive sale on Net-a-Porter.com, months before the collection hits stores. A portion of the proceeds will benefit charities such as the Alliance for Climate Protection, the United Nations Environment Programme's Billion Tree Campaign, and the NRDC. Mark your calendars -- Runway to Green will take place March 29th!

We end this post with some of our favorite (and most creative) fashion show invitations!

G-Star RAW Night with Gemma Arterton

RAW Nights is a series of multi-platform entertainment events, produced by G-Star so they could work with artists, designers, filmmakers, photographers and musicians who stand for craft and quality just like G-Star. Last month it was London's turn to host G-Star RAW Night. They celebrated the launch of Gemma Arterton as the new face of this campaign. This party was held at London's Mayfair One in a converted church! There was a gallery of never before seen pictures by Anton Corbijn, he made videos for U2! He also photographed each G-Star campaign so far.

Gemma did an interview with viceland.nl, she talked about how she got involved with this campaign and who her favorite fashion-icoon is!

Comforting Plum & Peach Crumble

Comforting Plum & Peach Crumble
In the name of fashion, well actually my dissertation, I have been researching, visiting archives and perusing through vintage Vogue. Plus it is New York Fashion Week, so that has kept me busy as you can see. So, as I was lazing around on my sofa this morning I thought I deserved a little treat and a dose of escapism. I decided to make this, it is exactly what you need after a hectic week and before an upcoming hectic week. Comfort, warmth and delicious flavours... plus this gave me the opportunity to use up some leftover fruit that I had in the basket after a food shoot.

Ingredients
Filling:
400g Ripe plums and peaches
Zest and juice of 1/2 an unwaxed orange
1/2 Cinnamon piece, broken up into pieces
A few cloves
1 Teaspoon of ground mixed spice
2 Tablespoons light brown sugar, or to taste
Topping:
50g Plain flour
50g Demerara or golden caster sugar
50g Unsalted butter, chilled and diced
50g Ground almonds
Flaked almonds, to decorate
Makes 2: Large individual dishes

Method:
1. Heat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4. Wash the plums and peaches, remove the stone and cut into quarters. Place in a bowl with the cinnamon, sugar, orange juice and zest, cloves and mixed spice. Toss this until the ingredients are mixed well, then put aside.
2. Mix the flour and sugar in a bowl and add the butter and mix into the flour. Rub the butter into the flour using your fingertips, until the mix turns into crumbs. Stir in the ground almonds.
3. Place the fruit mixture into the individual dishes and top with the crumble. Put these into the oven for 30-35 minutes, add the flaked almonds to the top of the crumbles halfway through the cooking time. Keep an eye on them to ensure the crumble doesn't burn.
4. Once they are ready serve with greek yoghurt, custard or vanilla ice-cream. <3
*Lipstick & Marzipan Tip: If you make too much of the crumble mixture, if your dish is smaller, pop into a food bag and place in the freezer and you can use it again.*

New York Fashion Week: Autumn/Winter 2011-12: Part Three

Rebecca Minkoff
This collection is essentially what girls want to wear come Fall. Apologies for the americanism but you can't deny that Fall sounds much more appealing than 'Autumn'. Slimline blazers with rolled up sleeves, high-waisted leather shorts and fur with narrow trousers. These are pieces that you buy for the season and make you look and feel amazing. Movement came from the swish of a maxi skirt and shape was played through voluminous capes and structured body-con.

Costello Tagliapietra
I must say I am a beloved fan of this design duo,  I adore their draping in particular. The opening red hue that could almost be a burnt orange looked gorgeous on the dress. They had many dresses with a just above-the-knee hemline and trousers came adorned with embellishment. Again, we saw a silk/fur combo this time in the form of fur mittens and hats with a silk dress... I shall be experimenting with this shortly.

Jeremy Laing
A burning hand print is always a good start to the proceedings, and a very clear indicator of what was to come. The mood was space-age with a sprinkling of eery distress. A dress with holes appeared almost elegant, and oversized jackets and suits in a washed out grey worked well. The stand-out look was the asymmetric moon-crater dress.

Nicole Miller
Graphic prints a plenty, in shades of blue. There was a futuristic feel that was played out with the metallics and structure of some of the pieces. The occasional glimpses of red, complemented the sea of blue and provided a good distraction. Look 22 needs to find itself on my person as soon as possible please.

Cynthia Rowley
Lurex is the best base for some shimmer as Rowley showed. She mixed textures in this collection and added a few geometric prints. A fur oversized coat looked unbelievably soft. Silk was seen here also as was my worst nightmare...velvet. I wrote a post on velvet a while back, so for my unadulterated comments on the subject, rummage through my archives. I loved the lurex especially when paired with a chocolate leather skirt.
