Global Plans, Local Actions

In support of the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, there have been over 3,000 events going on worldwide in hopes of establishing effective solutions of the world crisis. Organized by community leaders and individuals desiring to seek change, people all over the world are organizing candlelight vigils, wall signings, and marches in their cities and local towns. Bornholm, a small Danish island of population 43,000, also recently developed a program to cut its emissions to zero by developing clean energy. They are burning straw for district heat, using wind power for electricity, and developing a biofuels plant and infrastructure for electric cars. Rome is also now the first European capital to launch a plan for energy self-sufficiency, using more wind turbines and solar panels.

In addition, Native Land, Stop Eject also opened in Kunsthal Chalottenborg, Copenhagen last Saturday December 5, and continues till February 21, 2010. From the perspective of nomads, islanders, and indigenous people, the exhibition gives them a voice to speak on how the climate crisis is affecting human migration in all parts of the world.

And to give you the latest update on the Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, the EU leaders have committed to 3.6 billion dollars a year until 2012 to help developing countries. And the two countries, Norway and Mexico, have proposed a joint model for climate funding, using both the incomes from the UN-allowances and from individual countries.

The call to urgency and immediate action is louder than ever. And as there are only a few remaining days left of the Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, we hope that the agreements are finalized and change is near. As the 3.6 million supporters of Avaaz says to the three key leaders, Obama, Hatoyama, and Merkel, “fund the fight to save the world.”

Vintage finds of the Month

I popped into my local vintage store for their X-Mas party and picked up the following for the X-Mas season. I shall be popping back in in January to kick off 2010 with a shopping splurge. Plus everything I bought came to a bragainous £90. Yay.

Hat: I love this hat, the netting is so delicate and soft and there is
a small bow at the back. Very sophisticated and a classic and will look adorable
with a cute skirt and blouse to make it look less funeral-chic.

Bag:  I love vintage mock-croc bags, I have one already but
couldn't resist this clutch, it's quite roomy inside too which is good plus I heart
the gold detailing. Subtle but effective.

Dress: Too sweet. It reminds me of my school
pinafore and has a little hint of the nautical,
the fabric is quite thick so perfect for layering
up in winter.

Blouse: The volume in this top won me over
it looked great with the studded black miniskirt I was wearing at the time.
I'm thinking jeggings, leggings and body-con to team with this.

Dreaming of Barbie

As the avid Barbie fan that I am I thought I should do a Barbie post. I bought a 50th Anniversary special Barbie book at Waterstones this week by Jennie D'Amato, which is amazing plus I got the above keyring for my birthday. I'm waiting till Jan/Feb for the next Christian Louboutin Barbie to come out as I prefer it to the Cat Burglar one that just came out.

The Book
The book is jam packed with images, pop outs and cute extras as well as an intensive history of Barbie. Here are a few snaps from the book:

The Extras
My favourite parts of the book, were the added extras which came in sleeves in the book which you can pull out. There were replications of letters, membership cards, booklets etc. It made the history more realistic and visual. It made the book very special and a must-have for any Barbie fan.

When you wish upon Chanel...

I got the ring! Yes, the beautiful sparkly gorgeousness that was featured in December Vogue. <3. After my older post on the ring, The fairy ChanelMother answered my wish. It is just beautiful, I never want it to leave my manicured finger. Manicured I wish, I don't even remember the last time I had a manicure. That needs to be rectified as soon as possible. I'm thinking a x-mas inspired manicure, not red and green to cliched, I'm thinking mulled wine tones. Mmmh. So, the ring... I am so in love. Let's just stop and look at it's beauty.

Here are some of my presents from the BFF's so cute...

The Ultimate Vanilla Cupcakes

The Ultimate Vanilla Cupcakes
For my Pink & Silver birthday slumber party, I decided to make some cupcakes instead of having a birthday cake. I made my amazing Vanilla & Chocolate ones (older post) and thought I'd make some regular Vanilla ones too. They were gorgeous and my friends adored them. The recipe was really easy to make, I added some lemon zest that I had in the freezer for extra flavour.  The zest doesn't give an overwhelming lemony flavour just adds an extra zing and complements the vanilla essence.

Ingredients:

  • 4oz/115g butter, at room temperature
  • 4oz/115g caster sugar
  • 2 large eggs, at room temperature
  • half tsp vanilla extract
  • 4oz/115g self-raising flour
  • Lemon Zest to taste
Method:

1. Preheat the oven to 170C/325F/gas mark 3. Line a 12-hole cupcake tin with paper cases.
2. In the food processor, beat the butter, sugar, eggs, vanilla and optional zest until smooth.
3. Turn off processor and add flour. Mix the flour in, stopping as soon as it is blended.
4. Divide the mixture between the paper cases.
5. Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden and springy to the touch.
Then I decorated with chocolate balls covered in icing sugar and pink edible sparkles.

Don't you just love my sleepover mini-table: Girly DVD's, Lots of sweeties and snacks and goody bags filled with the essential beauty treats : )

Pret-A-Portea - A/W 09

Pret-A-Portea at The Berkeley Hotel is one of my favourite afternoon teas in London. It is a fashion inspired tea which in essence captures my two passions of cakes and fashion and brings them together on the prettiest Paul Smith tableware. So, me and the BFF's went there the other week for my birthday. Yes, a very delayed post but hey it's worth it. University drains my blogging existence, but it is X-Mas so I am back in the blogosphere. I had the S/S tea in Summer so I was delighted at the A/W tea. Feast your eyes on the delectable treats below, I'm hungry now...

The Mother spoke to The Berkeley and told them that it was my birthday, how cute! I nearly cried when the yummy waiter brought this out for me. In the middle is the Louis Vuitton Bunny Ears which were scrumptious. Thanks to the BFFs for making my day great. <3

British Fashion Awards 2009

A sparkly night of fashion at The Royal Court of Justice in London last night. One of the best nights of the fashion calendar is The British Fashion Awards. Here are the winners:

Designer of the Year: Christopher Bailey
Designer Brand of the Year: Burberry
Swarovski's Emerging Talent: Peter Pilotto and Holly Fulton
Model of the Year: Georgia May Jagger
Isabella Blow Award for Fashion Creator: Grace Coddington
Outstanding Achievement in Fashion Design: John Galliano
London 25 Award: Kate Moss
Accessory Designer: Katie Hillier
Menswear Designer: Kim Jones for Dunhill
BFC British Collection of the Year: Christopher Kane

I am thrilled with the winners this year, Christopher Bailey definetely deserved the award after his stunning display for S/S. Likewise after Burberry coming back to London, they too have had an amazing year and I am still coveting their ruched trench-dresses for Spring. Fashion East's Holly Fulton wholeheartedly deserved the award and I predict big things for her in the future likewise with Pilotto. The model of the year is always a fun award I like Georgia, she is instantly recognisable and has an old-school glamour. She has the interest that a model needs but is also sexy and glamourous which is coming back in the industry. Aww Grace, well you know my love for Grace so I am utterly thrilled with this, I may have to read my ode to Grace (check old post) again. Well, the legend/genius/master that is John Galliano really deserves this the title sums up his greatness to precise measure. Indeed, The Mosster does capture the spirit of British fashion and London, so it is no surprise that she won this public voted award. Mr Kane has also had a fantastic year and his last collection was very inspiring as was the success of his line for Topshop.
