Amy Winehouse has been defined in many ways, some good and some bad. What is undeniable is that she has had a remarkable impact on music during the last decade. Many people overlook the fact that she also had an impact on fashion, which of course is heavily disputed. We all saw the pictures showing clear evidence of her battle with addiction. However, we can't ignore that she had one of the most signature looks of the past decade. Her trademark beehive, heavy eyeliner and vintage tattoos gave a nod to the past. The hairstyle made famous by Brigitte Bardot in the 60's was given a dishevelled and modern re-invention by Amy. It wasn't only her fans who followed suit, and the 'Winehouse' became the hairstyle du jour and can still be found all over the country on a Saturday night out. I remember when I started to experiment with make-up and I couldn't manage the every tricky thin eye-liner. I saw Amy Winehouse on TV and thought that her heavy handed option looked more suitable and went with that. It's pretty much stayed with me since then.
Some prominent figures of the fashion industry have also given her style some recognition. Karl Lagerfeld who once heralded her as a style icon, also named her as a muse for Chanel's Paris-London Maison D'art show in 2007. Amy also designed a collection for Fred Perry last year and reflected her unique sense of style and complemented the brand's heritage. Roberto Cavalli has also sang her style praises and Jonathan Kelsey created a pair of shoes for her entitled the 'Amy' in 2008.
Amy Winehouse may have not been a traditional 'style icon' in the usual sense of the term. But, what really defines a 'style icon'? Do they need to be loved and adored by the world, never criticised and have a perfect life? I don't think believe so. Yes, Amy Winehouse had her demons and we saw the evidence of that in photographs of her on a frequent basis. Her look filtered down heavily not only onto the streets but also trickled up onto the catwalk. Her style has and will be copied and discussed for years. As will her undeniable talent and contribution to music.
