New York Fashion Week: Spring/Summer 2012 Update

Zac Posen
"Where do you see yourself in 10 years?" In an apartment in Greenwich Village, NY wearing this collection. I have already highlighted, which looks I want and the occasions where I will be wearing them. One of the remarkable evening gowns has The Met Gala written all over it. The collection of form-fitting pieces, focused on emphasising the silhouette of the body. There was an old glamour feel with corsets, pencil skirts and the occasional flirty dress. I'm in love.

Victoria Beckham
My BFF gave us an insight into her take on glamourous sportswear. A more complex and evolved affair then her beautiful hourglass dresses. This collection introduced us to an athletic mood, with Victoria Beckham's signature touches. Pops of orange, brightened up the navy tone on show. Dresses were still fitted in some cases but given the dynamic addition of utility straps. The outerwear was delightful, especially in the clay and slate tones. Her expanding bag collection and pointy Christian Louboutins (some flats) were the perfect accompaniment.

Diane von Furstenberg
This was a very uplifting and positive collection. There were prints galore, with the floral reigning supreme. The prints weren't my favourite part of the collection, it all got a bit too much. The opening looks were in white and featured an oversized white shirt, with paperbag waist skirt. The pieces, were cool and summery and very easy to wear. The tailored looks were stunning and ensured a diversity amongst the pieces.

DKNY
Against the back drop of a NYC Yellow Taxi, topped with a DKNY ad, Donna Karan showed her latest collection. The looks came in different colour stories, monochrome, denim (which, featured a lovely denim tux dress), an eye-catching red and blue poppy print and some soft tweeds. A smudgy floral print looked gorgeous also. The collection was perfect for summer chic.

Thakoon
When India meets the Wild West... this is what you get. By the end of the collection, I was rather overwhelmed... but it did seem to work. The gorgeous paisley prints were the stars of the show. I loved the stunning blue tone with orange appliqué detailing. The trench coat with the stunning detail was one of my favourite looks. But, if anyone can pull-off a culture clash it is Thakoon.

Alexander Wang
The mesh looks were worn with bright layers underneath, hands in pockets and wet-look hair. There was a tough and urban feel, which we love about Wang. There was a biker/racer girl theme here, his take on the sportswear trend, which is a signature of his. Of course, Wang added a clever and thought-provoking take on the trend. Dark floral prints were given volume with oversized pockets and peplums, and turned into oversized biker jackets complete with helmets.

Classic Victoria Sponge Cake

Classic Victoria Sponge Cake
With all the fabulosity and excitement of New York Fashion Week, what better way to watch the collections than with a slice of a quintessentially British cake. You know that Jason Wu dress, that you will fantasise about for the rest of the season, it will look even better when accompanied by cake. Trust me.

Ingredients:
Sponge:
175g Unsalted butter, softened
175g Caster sugar
3 Medium free-range eggs, at room temperature
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
175g Self-raising flour
1 tablespoon milk, at room temperature

Filling:
140g Butter
280g Icing Sugar
1/2 teaspoon Vanilla Essence
1 teaspoon Milk

4 rounded tablespoons Strawberry Jam

2 x 20.5cm round tins
greased with butter and the bases lined with greaseproof paper

Method:
1. Heat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4. Put the softened butter and sugar into a bowl and beat with an electric whisk or mixer until light and fluffy. You can use a wooden spoon if you do not have a mixer.

2. Beat the eggs and vanilla with a fork until well mixed, then gradually add to the butter mixture, beating well after each addition. Sift the flour on to the mixture, add the milk and carefully fold in with a large metal spoon.

3. Divide the mixture between the 2 tins and spread evenly. Bake for 20-25 minutes, until golden brown or when a skewer inserted into the middle comes out clean. Run a round-bladed knife around the inside of the tins to loosen the sponges, then turn them out on to a wire rack and leave to cool completely.

4. I chose to use a buttercream but you can also use double or whipped cream to fill the cake. For the buttercream: Mix together the butter, icing sugar and vanilla essence, I found that using a wooden spoon to mix gives a better result. Set one sponge upside down on on a serving plate and spread with the cream. Top with the jam. Gently place the second sponge, golden crust side uppermost, on top and gently but firmly press down to sandwich the cakes. Dust with icing sugar and serve <3

Lipstick & Marzipan *Tip*: For the buttercream, add more icing sugar and milk as you go, in order to have a fluffy and creamy consistency. As you don't want the cream to leak on the sides. Alternatively, you can use whipped cream and fresh raspberries/strawberries instead of the buttercream and jam. The alternative will need to be kept refrigerated.

New York Fashion Week: Spring/Summer 2012 Update

Cynthia Rowley
Got to love a bit of Rowley and you got to love a bit of warped floral prints. These prints were divine and the digital effect gave an edgy twist to the usual summer floral. The metallic theme added a gorgeous  look to the pieces. Flared dresses, micro shorts and leather mesh were all on offer, in this delightful collection.

Yigal Azrouel
It was simple and well done, exactly how I would order a steak, if I wasn't vegetarian. The flashes of colour worked amongst the basic pieces, reminiscent of Celine in places. I was a big fan of the deep v slinky dress with drawstring waist. I am also liking the jacket/cardigan casually draped over the shoulders look, that have been at a few shows.

Ruffian
Another nod to athleticism was seen at this collection, with the sport of choice being equestrian. Little Mrs Jockey had a sporty feel with a glossy twist. Ruffle necks, block stripes and colour pops all featured. There was a collision between the more austere pieces and the ladylike blouses and dresses. One of my favourite looks was a jewel blue bra top and flirty mini.

Altuzarra
Joseph Altuzarra has given us his take on the athleticism theme which appears to be an emerging trend in New York. Cut-out leather with a mesh effect was undeniably sporty but the parachute straps featured on the shoulders, cemented the trend. The primarily monochrome palette was then given a burst of life in the form of a birds of paradise, hawaiian extravaganza print. I love the complexity of the collection and the variety of pieces used.

Jason Wu
A rather daring collection from Jason Wu, it still had the pretty romance but this time with an edgy and darker twist. The sexy thigh baring shorts were on the right side of cute with the addition of a bow collar and fine knit. Lightweight parkas were the perfect cover up and worked well with the moody floral prints. Peplums, feathers and occasional touches of sparkles added to the femininity. The red-carpet worthy dresses, featured short hemlines at the front and longer lengths at the back.

Monique Lhuillier
This is the red-carpet interpretation of the sportswear trend. Form-fitting and body-con pieces were given an athletic update. The tight ponytails and eyeliner were a clue as was the panelling and leather detailing.  Seductive slashes and moments of lace ensured that the collection was still primarily sexy and feminine. A paint splattered print gave the evening pieces a modern and eye-catching look. The red-carpet numbers were just breathtaking. Sigh of content.

Prabal Gurung
There was a lot to take in here. The floral print was beautiful, and the lovely colours still managed to have a dark undertone to it. There were many themes at play including fetishism with leather and rope harnesses and leather detailing in many places. The sheerness attributed to many of the looks gave an ethereal quality to an otherwise eery fairytale mood. The lipstick was amazing with the two-tone effect appearing as if the model's lips were open. Interesting.

New York Fashion Week: Spring/Summer 2012

It's that time of the year again. Just as we start to prepare ourselves for the delightfulness of an Autumn wardrobe, it's time to think about Spring/Summer 2012. I am more of an Autumn/Winter girl myself, but I am rather excited about this season. I love London, Paris, Milan and New York each for their own offerings to the fashion season. London offers excitement in the form of upcoming talented designers and heritage brands. It always feels new and positive. Paris and Milan bring the glamour and craftmanship and for me, they usually cement the trends. New York has a good mix of everything, but I do love the wearability and accessibility in the collections, and the ease in which you can interpret the trends. So... here are the shows of the week so far:

BCBG Max Azria
A bit of colour blocking action was seen in an array of athletic and silky dresses. The mustard teamed with the orange was lovely. The pieces had a clean silhouette with geometric influences. The pleating in some of the looks and the aztec prints added another element, to bring some variety to the collection. The pieces still had sex appeal even though there was a distinct sporty feel with the hoods and slouchy looks.

Cushnie et Ochs
I am such a housewife-in-training, well by housewife I mean that I will bake... preferably in couture and not an apron in my Elle Decor style kitchen. So, I loved this collection. I always look forward to  Cushnie et Ochs in New York and I was definitely not disappointed. It was very cute, in a naughty futuristic housewife way. The pieces included super sexy bustier dresses which reached to under the knee to counteract all of that cleavage. Peplums were a plenty as were cut-outs in a geometric fashion and very barbie-esque, flirty flared skirts and dresses. I want.

Jenni Kayne
This collection was very lady of the manor chic mixed with an urban carefree attitude. First look that needs to be noted is this pink blouse, lace skirt ensemble with cardigan casually draped. I need to wear this immediately, in fact I may do so next week. I am loving these pops of pink. The collection used traditional pieces and made them casual with basics. Such as the classic tweed skirt suit with a white tee and chunky knits brought up to date with orange trousers. Understated with that hi-lo effect.

M.Patmos
Whilst, I adore Marcia Patmos' sustainable/green/environmentally friendly ethos and dedication to the cause, I wasn't blown away by this collection. Her knitwear is always good, and the pieces were laidback and casual but it was just a bit predictable. I did like the scarf draped and belted worn with a cardigan. But, I wasn't a fan of the opening look with the white elasticated-waist skirt but the silver maxi skirt of the same elasticated variety did win me over.

Rachel Comey
A modern and lightweight collection, great summer pieces. But, what I want to talk about the most are the prints. I thought they were great, simple and subtle with hints of texture. The one that stood out for me the most was the trompe l'oeil knit print, this was a print of a chunky knit that was shown on the lightest silk, and gave a great effect. A gorgeous landscape print offered feminine modernity and greatly complemented the looks it was shown on.

Wes Gordon
I am completely obsessive about snakeskin at the moment. I have been walking into shops and asking specifically for snakeskin pieces, and I have typed 'snakeskin' into the ASOS, Topshop, Zara, Net-A-Porter etc search boxes far too often. It's a problem. So, when I saw this glorious opening look complete with this to die for snakeskin jacket, I knew that the collection would be good. Good it most definitely was. There were fitted shift dresses with obi-style belts, snakeskin shorts (yum) with a powder blue cropped jacket and lovely wide leg trousers. The looks that stood out for me were the navy and white striped skirt, which was flared and floor length and paired with a yellow vest. The nude jacket with burnt orange panel and navy trousers was also a winner.

Today, we highlight some of the most recent and influential ideas that are shaping today's culture. While in no particular order, here are some of our favorites!

Givmo.com
Most of us know what it feels like to clean out the closet each year and find piles of clothes, house gadgets, and other little knick-knacks we no longer want or need. Occasionally, we will take the time to drop it off at the nearest Salvation Army, but more times than not, we usually throw these things out or tuck it away somewhere deep down our closets, not wanting to deal with it.

The founders behind Givmo realized this frustration and unnecessary waste, and decided to actually do something about it. Like an online Goodwill with extra perks, Givmo allows people to upload photos of things that they want to give away, and people from all over the country can see your listings in an organized online shopping space. When someone decides that they want your item, he/she agrees to pay the shipping cost for you to mail it to them. For your convenience, Givmo will provide the shipping label and your item can be dropped off or picked up by your local UPS courier. And what's even better, Givmo will donate $1 to charity for every item donated on their site. Considering both eco and social responsibility, Givmo is an easy and creative new way to give away (or find) free stuff.

Ze O Ze
Five pairs in one, Israeli industrial designer Daniela Bekerman's "ze o ze" shoe (translated as 'this or that' in Hebrew) transforms into five uniquely different styles. Using modular attachments, the plain flat shoe transforms to a brogue-inspired lace-up, a Mary Jane kitten-heel, or a casual strappy sandal. Fit to adjust a wide range of multiple occasions, the smartly designed shoe uses less material, produces less waste, and is a great buy for those with a tight budget. With the varying styles all at the price of one, this shoe definitely gives you your money's worth.

Last May, Proctor & Gamble announced the launch of their Supplier Environmental Sustainability Scorecard and rating process. As their next step to environmental sustainability, the scorecard was designed as a holistic effort to encourage P&G's suppliers and partners to track down their total environmental footprint and work collaboratively in becoming more environmentally sustainable. Earlier this month, P&G announced that it is extending their scorecard to another 200 of it's current 400 top suppliers with goals to improve it's corporate environmental performance.  As P&G works with a wide range of industries all across the globe, including packaging, logistics, manufacturing, chemicals, and financial services, this sustainability scorecard program will make huge, lasting impacts in many areas.

McDonald's may not be one of the first companies we think of when it comes to sustainability, but when we heard about their new eco-friendly uniforms, we were all pleasantly surprised. Worn Again, a resource efficiency business that upcycles corporate textile waste into new products, is partnering with British designers Wayne and Gerardine Hemingway to create a closed-loop system, taking old uniforms and reprocessing them into raw materials for new ones with zero waste. Working with Alexandra, a leading uniform manufacturer, this collaborative project is a young, innovative way to think about sustainability in a broader aspect. The uniforms are expected to be revealed just in time for the 2012 Olympic Games in London. It is planned that employees of the Olympic Park restaurants will be the first to wear the new uniforms. After the games, the outfits will make their debut all across the 1,200 restaurants in the UK. And hopefully, it doesn't end there as we'd love to see this change make their way across the Atlantic.

Who would have thought that the world's largest rooftop farm is located right here in the bustling city of NYC? Brooklyn Grange is a 40,000 square foot elevated organic garden located on top of a six-story warehouse built by Bromley Caldari Architects. Grown by urban farmers, the rooftop cultivates 40 various fruits and vegetables, including tomatoes, peppers, fennel, kale, beets, carrots, and a variety of herbs. While it's first farm is located in Long Island City Queens, their goal is to put more farms on roofs throughout New York and beyond, growing more food and improving the overall quality of life in the city. September MBF Favorite Picks

photo via: NY Times

For this month's MBF's Favorite Picks, we head South to one of the world's most exciting countries: Brazil. With emerging markets in finance, fashion, real estate, and culture, this South American country is making headlines with natives returning back to their homeland, as well as various industry insiders from all over the world. While most parts of the world are facing financial downslides, Brazil's unemployment is at historic lows as the country is now one of the biggest buyers of United States Treasury securities, taking a sharp turn from where the country was heading only 30 years ago. This week, let's take a look at some of the latest news highlighting what makes this country such a hot destination.

photo via: NY Times

1. Comedy Central Goes to Brazil
While the American-based television network Comedy Central has already established itself as a global network with channels in countries such as Britain, Poland, Israel, and New Zealand, this year, the network finally makes its debut in Brazil. With 200 million people, this is a giant stepping stone for the network as it is not only their largest overseas market, but also their first venture in Latin America.

However, this comes as no surprise as comedy is booming in Brazil due to a new generation of comedians and a growing number of entertained fans. The Brazilian comedian Rafinha Bastos is leading the way for his home country as he was also recently named the most influential person in the Twitter universe. Mixing currently existing popular American TV shows like The Colbert Report and The Daily Show With John Stewart, the network also plans to hire native writers and editors to cater to the Brazilian culture. Furthermore, since the economy is booming, the market for cable TV is rising, making it the perfect time to launch the channel.

2. "USAnatomy" by Steven Klein
Photographer and W contributor Steven Klein's new exhibition "USAnatomy" kicked off earlier this month for Brazilian society. Curated by Chico Lowndes at the Brazilian Museum of Sculpture in Sao Paulo, the attendees were invited to witness 30 rarely seen Polaroids, including the legendary July 2005 issue of W, featuring the celebrity couple, Brad and Angelina. The show will run till August 28 as part of the annual IGUATEMI photo series.

3. Retailers Expand Into Brazil
With a growing number of middle-class, retailers are all geared toward capturing the attention of the growing Brazilian market. Carrefour claims that Brazil is an important motor for their growth as the country became the retailer's second largest market in terms of sales during the first quarter of this year.

In addition, the NY-based handbag and accessory brand Coach took a smart move and extended its retail stores into Brazil. Expected to launch it's first stores in São Paulo within the next twelve months, Coach has been eyeing the country for the last year before finally signing a deal with Aste Group, enabling it to expand into freestanding stores in local shopping centers. As the economy is rapidly developing, Coach hopes to catch the attention of the "growing aspirational consumer" and believes that their brand will strongly resonate with the Brazilian market. The trend-based fast fashion retailer Topshop/Topman will also enter Brazil in February or March, as one of their several new global ventures.

4. Beco do Batman
In order to find the best graffiti of São Paulo, locals recommend you take a walk down the colorful walls of Beco do Batman "Batman's Alley" located in Rua Goncalo Alfonso. Originally just a typical narrow alleyway, artists have brought new life to these streets and turned them into an open-air gallery. While there are some that have remained for long periods, there are always new illustrations popping up each week, making it an evolving art space.

5. Myla Launches Swimwear in Brazil
When it comes to swimwear, Brazilians are the expert. Therefore, it's no surprise that British lingerie label Myla is revamping it's swimwear line in collaboration with Brazilian designer Amir Slama, the cofounder of the swim label Rosa Cha. Launching it's Cruise 2012 collection in November, the 60-piece collection includes a wide assortment, from both sleek and simple to elaborate and glamorous. Staying true to Myla's design sense, the styles are all about making women feel confident in their own bodies, designed with supporting structure to sculpt the body. All designs will be manufactured in Brazil, where Slama oversees the process.

Since the bus is the most common form of transportation in the bustling cities of Brazil, local commuters were thrilled earlier this month on the inauguration of the "Bus Rapid System," taking full effect in Leblon and Ipanema beginning August 20th. With this new system, buses can ride faster and more efficiently, cutting traffic time and reducing congestion. Of the 55 lines that are currently operating in Ipanema, fifty are planned to be included in the BRS system, with five lines no longer operating. As the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games are slowly approaching, Rio de Janeiro is quickly on it's way in upgrading it's infrastructure.

7. The Laranjeiras Residence
Real estate has skyrocketed in Brazil and this house in Rio de Janeiro is a true gem. Called the Laranjeiras Residence, the home features an open box design, meaning that "it was built around the natural surroundings." Using it's landscape to enhance the layout, the concept of the design gives the feeling of freedom within the space. Using large windows, wide openings, high ceilings, and large open rooms, this is an extravagant seasonal vacation house.
